عن عائشةَ رضي اللّه عنها قالت: كان رسولُ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم إذَا فَاتَتْهُ الصَّلاةُ مِنْ اللَّيْلِ مِنْ وجعٍ أَوْ غيْرِهِ، صلَّى مِنَ النَّهَارِ ثنْتَيْ عشْرَةَ ركعة. رواه مسلم.
Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) missed his night prayer due to illness or some other reason, he would pray twelve units during the day. Narrated by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
الصَّلاة من اللَّيل: أي ورده صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم من قيام اللّيل، وكان إحدى عشرة ركعة. من وجع: أي بسبب مرض أو نحوه.
"The night prayer" refers to his regular nightly devotion (peace be upon him), which was eleven units of prayer. "Due to illness" means because of sickness or the like.

من فاته ورده لعذر يستحب أن يقضيه بعد ذهاب عذره، كما فعل النبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم. جواز قضاء النوافل، إلّا ما كان يفوت بفوات وقته. هذا الحديث يشير إلى أنّ عدد الركعات التي يقضيها بالنهار يستحب أن يكون بالمقدار الذي يواظب عليه بالليل، ثم يزيد على الوتر ركعة أخرى ليكون شفعًا. النبي صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم كانت عادته صلاة إحدى عشرة ركعة بالليل، فلذا كان يقضي اثنتي عشرة ركعة بالنهار.
Whoever misses his regular devotional practice due to a valid excuse is recommended to make it up after the excuse has passed, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to do. It is permissible to make up voluntary prayers, except for those whose time has passed and cannot be made up. This hadith indicates that the number of units prayed during the day as a make-up is recommended to be equal to the number one regularly prays at night, with the addition of one extra unit so that the total becomes an even number. The Prophet (peace be upon him) customarily prayed eleven units at night, which is why he would pray twelve units during the day as a make-up.
