عن أبي ذَرٍّ جُنْدُبِ بْنِ جُنَادةَ، وأبي عبْدِ الرَّحْمنِ مُعاذِ بْنِ جبل رضيَ اللّهُ عنهما، عنْ رسولِ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، قال: «اتَّقِ اللّهَ حَيْثُمَا كُنْتَ وأَتْبِعِ السَّيِّئَةَ الْحسنةَ تَمْحُهَا، وخَالقِ النَّاسَ بخُلُقٍ حَسَنٍ» رواهُ التِّرْمذيُّ وقال: حديثٌ حسنٌ.
Abu Dharr Jundub ibn Junadah, and Abu 'Abd al-Rahman Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with both of them), reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Fear Allah wherever you are, follow a bad deed with a good deed and it will erase it, and treat people with good character." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is a good (hasan) hadith.
الشرح · explanation
اتق اللّه: أي اجعل بينك وبين عقاب اللّه وقاية؛ وذلك بفعل أوامره وترك نواهيه. حيثما كنت: في أي مكان كنت، حيث يراك الناس وحيث لا يرونك، اكتفاءً بنظره تعالى. وأَتْبِع السيّئة الحسنة: إذا فعلت سيئة فألحقها بحسنة.
Ittaq Allah: meaning place a barrier between yourself and Allah's punishment by fulfilling His commands and avoiding His prohibitions. Haythuma kunt: wherever you are, whether people can see you or not, being content with Allah's watchful gaze. Wa atbi' al-sayyi'ah al-hasanah: if you commit a sin, follow it up with a good deed.

الأمر بملازمة التقوى في كلّ الأحوال. الحسنة تمحو السيئة، أي تزيلها من كتب الحفظة، وقيل هذا كناية عن عدم المؤاخذة بها، وقيل هذا في الصغائر، أما الكبائر فلا يكفرها إلا التوبة بشروطها، وهذا في غير المعاصي المتعلقة بحقوق الناس لأنّه يشترط فيها الأداء أو الحصول على المسامحة إضافة إلى الشروط السابقة. من حسن الخلق طلاقة الوجه، وكف الأذى، وبذل المعروف، ومعاملة الناس بمثل ما تحب أن يعاملوك. في الحديث دليل على إمكان اكتساب حُسْن الخُلق وإلَّا لَمَا صحَّ الأمرُ به.
The command to constantly maintain piety (taqwa) in all circumstances. A good deed erases a bad deed -- meaning it removes it from the records of the guardian angels. Some say this is a metaphor for not being held accountable for it. Others say this applies to minor sins, while major sins are only expiated through repentance with its conditions. This applies to sins other than those involving the rights of people, for which fulfillment of the right or obtaining forgiveness is additionally required. Among the traits of good character are a cheerful countenance, refraining from harm, offering kindness, and treating people as you would like to be treated. The hadith provides evidence that good character can be acquired; otherwise, it would not be valid to command it.
