عن أبي هريرةَ رضيَ اللهُ عنه قال: كنَّا مع رسولِ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، إِذ سَمِعَ وَجْبَةً فقال: «هَلْ تَدْرُونَ ما هذا؟» قُلْنَا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، قال: «هذا حَجَرٌ رُمِيَ بِهِ في النَّارِ مُنْذُ سَبْعِينَ خَريفًا فَهُوَ يَهْوِي في النَّارِ الآنَ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلى قَعْرِهَا، فَسَمِعْتُمْ وجْبَتَهَا» رواه مسلم.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he heard a thud. He said, "Do you know what this is?" We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said, "This is a stone that was cast into the Fire seventy years ago, and it has been falling through the Fire until now, when it has reached its bottom, and so you heard its thud." خريفًا: عامًا. يهوي: يسقط وجبتها: أي صوت سقوط الحجر في النار.
"Kharif" (autumn): a year. "Falling" (yahwi): plummeting downward. "Its thud" (wajbatuha): the sound of the stone landing in the Fire.

The depth of Hell, which entails the severity of its punishment and the need to fear it. An honor granted by Allah to the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in their hearing the sound of the stone falling into Hell. The recommendation of referring knowledge to Allah, Exalted is He, regarding that which a person has no knowledge of. A teacher arousing interest and attention before explaining, so as to be more conducive to focus and understanding.
