Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him wherever he remembers Me. By Allah, Allah is more delighted by the repentance of His servant than one of you who finds his lost mount in the wilderness. Whoever draws near to Me a hand's span, I draw near to him a cubit; and whoever draws near to Me a cubit, I draw near to him an arm's length; and when he comes to Me walking, I come to him hurrying." Agreed upon. It is reported in the two Sahihs: "And I am with him when (hina) he remembers Me," and in another narration: "wherever (haythu)," and both are authentic.

"as My servant thinks of Me": that He will forgive him if he seeks forgiveness, answer him if he supplicates, and hope for His pardon. "and I am with him": the companionship of Allah, the Exalted, with His servants through mercy and care. "more delighted": delight (al-farah) is an attribute established for Allah, the Exalted, which we affirm in a manner befitting His majesty and greatness, glory be to Him. "his lost mount": his riding-camel that he lost, upon which were his provisions and drink. "the wilderness (al-falah)": the land in which there is no water. "al-ba' / al-bu'": the length of a person's two arms, his upper arm, and the breadth of his chest — which is the measure of four cubits.

Holding a good opinion of Allah, the Exalted, hoping for His pardon and mercy, and not despairing of His forgiveness. Hastening to Allah with repentance and increasing in righteous deeds. Allah's delight at the repentance of His servant — while He is in the station of Lordship — necessitates that the servant, in the station of weakness and servitude, hasten to repentance and gratitude to Allah, the Exalted. Affirming the companionship (ma'iyyah) of Allah, the Exalted, in a manner befitting His majesty, the Exalted.
