عن أَنسٍ، رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: سَمِعْتُ رسولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يقول: «قالَ اللهُ تعالى: يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ؛ إِنَّكَ مَا دَعوْتَني وَرَجوْتَني غَفَرْتُ لَكَ عَلى ما كَانَ مِنكَ ولا أُبَالِي، يَا ابْنَ آدمَ، لَوْ بَلغَتْ ذُنُوبُكَ عَنَانَ السَّمَاءِ، ثُمَّ اسْتَغْفَرْتَني غَفَرتُ لَكَ ولا أُبالي، يَا بْنَ آدَم إِنَّكَ لَو أَتَيْتَني بِقُرابِ الأَرْضِ خطايا، ثُمَّ لَقِيْتَني لا تُشْرِكُ بِي شَيْئًا لأَتَيْتُكَ بِقُرَابِهَا مَغْفِرَةً» رواه الترمذي وقال: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Allah, the Exalted, said: O son of Adam, as long as you call upon Me and place your hope in Me, I will forgive you for whatever has come from you, and I will not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and then you sought My forgiveness, I would forgive you, and I would not mind. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly filling the earth, and then you met Me without associating anything with Me, I would meet you with forgiveness nearly the like of it." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is a good (hasan) hadith.
الشرح · explanation
ما دعوتني: أي: إذا دعوتني، وما دمت تدعوني وترجوني. عَنَانُ السَّماءِ: قيل: هو مَا عَنَّ لَكَ منها، أي: ظَهَرَ إذَا رَفَعْتَ رَأْسَكَ، وقيلَ: هو السَّحَابُ. قُرابُ الأَرْضِ: هو ما يُقارِبُ مِلأَهَا.
"as long as you call upon Me": that is, if you call upon Me, and so long as you call upon Me and place your hope in Me. "the clouds of the sky ('anan al-sama')": it has been said it is what appears to you of it when you raise your head; and it has been said it is the clouds. "nearly filling the earth (qurab al-ard)": that which approaches filling it.

سعة فضل الله عزّ وجلّ وكرمه، فإنّ رحمته لا نهاية لها. الحثّ على الاستغفار والدعاء ورجاء رحمة الله سبحانه. أنّ الذنوب مهما كثرت وفحشت يُرجى غفرانها من الله عزّ وجلّ إلّا الشرك به فإنّه لا يُغفر. تقبيح أمر الشرك والتنفير منه فهو أعظم الذنوب لأنّ فيه افتراءً على الذات الإلهية وتنكرًا لحقوق اللهِ تعالى في الألوهية والربوبية والوحدانية. إثبات لقاء الله تعالى.
The vastness of Allah's bounty, the Mighty and Majestic, and His generosity, for His mercy is without end. Urging the seeking of forgiveness, supplication, and hope for the mercy of Allah, glory be to Him. That sins, however many and grave, may be hoped to be forgiven by Allah, the Mighty and Majestic — except associating partners with Him, for that is not forgiven. Reviling the matter of polytheism (shirk) and warning against it, for it is the gravest of sins, since it contains a fabrication against the Divine Essence and a denial of the rights of Allah, the Exalted, in His divinity, lordship, and oneness.
