عنْ جابرٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: كُنَّا إِذا صَعِدْنَا كَبَّرْنَا، وإِذا نَزَلْنَا سبَّحْنَا. رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Whenever we ascended [a height] we would say "Allah is the Greatest," and whenever we descended we would say "Glory be to Allah." Reported by al-Bukhari.
الشرح · explanation
صعدنا: علونا مرتفعًا. نزلنا: أي هبطنا منخفضًا. سبَّحنا: قلنا سبحان اللّه.
"We ascended": we climbed up to a high place. "We descended": that is, we went down to a lower place. "We glorified": we said "Glory be to Allah."

استحباب تكبير المسافر عند صعود مرتفع تذكيرًا بعلوّ اللّه تعالى وعظمته على كل شيء. استحباب تسبيح المسافر عند النزول تنزيهًا للّه تعالى عمّا لا يليق به من النقص عند حصول ما يشعر بالدنو. ينبغي للمسلم أن يكون ذاكرًا للّه تعالى في كل أحواله، في سفره وحضره كما هو حال رسول اللّهِ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم.
The recommendation of the traveler saying the takbir when ascending a height, as a reminder of the loftiness and greatness of Allah the Exalted above all things. The recommendation of the traveler saying the tasbih when descending, declaring Allah the Exalted free of any imperfection unbefitting Him upon encountering what suggests lowness. It behooves the Muslim to be mindful of Allah the Exalted in all his states, in travel and at home, as was the state of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
