عَنْ أَبي هُريرةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رجُلًا قالَ: يا رسُولَ اللّهِ، إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُسافِرَ فَأَوْصِنِي، قالَ: «عَلَيْكَ بِتَقْوَى اللّهِ، وَالتَّكْبِيرِ عَلى كُلِّ شَرَفٍ» فَلَمَّا ولَّى الرَّجُلُ قالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ اطْوِ لهُ البُعْدَ، وَهَوِّنْ عَليْهِ السَّفرَ» رواهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I intend to travel, so advise me." He said: "Hold fast to the fear of Allah, and say the takbir upon every elevation." When the man turned to leave, he said: "O Allah, fold up the distance for him and make the journey easy for him." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

عليك: أي الزم. شرف: مكان عال. ولَّى: أدبر، ذهب.
"Hold fast to (alayka)": that is, adhere to. "Elevation (sharaf)": a high place. "Turned to leave": turned his back and departed.

حرص الصحابة على طلب الوصيّة من الرسول صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم ليرشدهم إلى ما فيه صلاحهم في الدنيا والآخرة. مشروعيّة طلب المسافر ممّن يثق بعلمه وفضله النصح والدعاء. وصيّة المسافر بتقوى اللّه عزّ وجلّ وتعليمه آداب السفر. الدعاء للمسافر بما يفيده في سفره ويبعد عنه المشقة. مشروعيّة تكبير المسافر إذا صعد في المكان العالي كالتلّة أو الجبل. دعاء النّبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم لأصحابه دليل على رأفته ورحمته بهم.
The Companions' eagerness to seek counsel from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he might guide them to what is good for them in this world and the Hereafter. The legitimacy of the traveler seeking advice and supplication from one whose knowledge and merit he trusts. Advising the traveler to fear Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) and teaching him the etiquette of travel. Supplicating for the traveler with what will benefit him on his journey and remove hardship from him. The legitimacy of the traveler saying the takbir when he ascends a high place such as a hill or a mountain. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) supplication for his Companions is proof of his compassion and mercy toward them.
