عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، وَيُوتِرُ بِرَكْعَةٍ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray at night two [rak'ahs] by two, and would conclude with a single rak'ah as witr. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

صلاة التهجّد تصحّ في جميع أجزاء الليل. أنّ الأصل في صلاة اللّيل وهو الأفضل أن تكون ركعتين ركعتين، ثم تختم بالوتر.
The tahajjud prayer is valid in all parts of the night. The basic and preferred manner of the night prayer is that it be performed two rak'ahs at a time, then concluded with the witr.
