Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever learns a knowledge by which the Face of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) ought to be sought, learning it only to attain thereby some worldly gain, will not find the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection"—meaning its scent. Reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih (authentic) chain.
"Seeks" (yabtaghi): seeks and intends. "To attain thereby some gain": to obtain by means of it something of worldly enjoyment, such as a position or status. "Will not find the fragrance of Paradise": will not smell its scent; this is a figurative expression for his remoteness from it and his not entering it with the saved.

The obligation of sincerity in seeking knowledge, and that the aim behind it be the pleasure of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). Whoever seeks knowledge for the sake of Allah the Exalted, and worldly gain comes to him consequently, it is permissible for him to take it, and that does not harm him.
