عن عِمْرَانَ بْنِ الحُصَيْنِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَّمَ أَبَاهُ حُصَيْنًا كَلِمتَيْنِ يَدْعُو بِهِمَا: «اللَّهُمَّ أَلْهِمْنِي رُشْدِي، وَأَعِذْنِي مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وقَالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Imran ibn al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his father Husayn two phrases with which to supplicate: "O Allah, inspire me with my right guidance, and protect me from the evil of my own soul." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

ألهمني رشدي: أي ألهمني الهدى بالتوفيق للأعمال المرضية. أعذني: اعصمني. من شر نفسي: من شرور نفسي وأهوائها، المؤدية إلى الهلاك في الدنيا والطرد من رحمة اللّه في الآخرة.
"Inspire me with my right guidance": that is, inspire me with guidance by granting me success in the deeds that please You. "Protect me": preserve me. "From the evil of my own soul": from the evils of my soul and its desires, which lead to ruin in this world and to expulsion from Allah's mercy in the Hereafter.
