عَنْ عائِشَةَ رضي اللّه عَنْهَا أنَّ النبيّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَالَ: «الْحُمَّى مِنْ فيْحِ جَهَنَّم فأبْرِدُوهَا بِالماءِ» متفقٌ عليه.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fever is from the raging heat of Hell, so cool it with water." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
فيح جهنم: أي قوة حرها.
"The raging heat of Hell (fayh Jahannam)": that is, the intensity of its heat.

استحباب وضع الماء على وجه المحموم وأطرافه، وهذا من باب الطب النبوي، وقد ثبت أنّ الماء البارد يلطف من حرارة المريض المصاب ببعض أنواع الحميات.
The recommendation of placing water on the face and extremities of a feverish person; this is part of Prophetic medicine, and it has been established that cool water alleviates the heat of a patient afflicted with certain types of fever.
