عن أبي هريرة رضي اللّه عنه عن النبيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «الإِيمَانُ بِضْعٌ وَسبْعُونَ، أوْ بِضْعٌ وَسِتُّونَ شُعْبَةً: فَأفْضلُهَا: قوْلُ لا إلَـٰهَ إلَّا اللّهُ، وَأدْنَاهَا: إمَاطَةُ الأذَى عنِ الطَّرِيقِ، وَالحيَاءُ شُعْبةٌ مِنَ الإِيمانِ» متفقٌ عليه.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Faith has seventy-odd — or sixty-odd — branches. The highest of them is the declaration 'There is no god but Allah,' and the lowest of them is removing a harmful object from the road. And modesty is a branch of faith." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

البِضْعُ: من ثلاثة إلى تسعةٍ. بضع وسبعون أو بضع وستّون: هذا شك من الراوي، والمراد بالعدد التكثير والمبالغة. الحياء: الحشمة، صفة تقوم في النفس، فتكفها عن فعل ما يُعاب ويُندم عليه لدى العقلاء. الشعبة: القطعة والغصن من الشجرة، والفرع من كل أصل.
"Odd" (bid') means a number between three and nine. "Seventy-odd or sixty-odd" reflects doubt on the part of the narrator; the intended meaning is abundance and emphasis. "Modesty" (al-haya') refers to a sense of decency — a quality that resides in the soul and restrains it from doing what is blameworthy and regrettable in the eyes of rational people. "Branch" (shu'bah) refers to a piece or a branch of a tree — a division stemming from a larger origin.

بيان كثرة أبواب الخير وتفاوت درجاتها وأجورها. أنّ الإيمان مراتب حسب أهمية العمل الذي يُثمره وينشأ عنه. أنّ الإيمان والعمل متلازمان لا ينفك أحدهما عن الآخر ولا يغني عنه. لا إلـٰه إلّا اللّه أفضل كلمة، مع اعتقاد مضمونها والعمل بمقتضاها، وهي مفتاح الجنّة، وما يُدخَل به إلى الإسلام. فضيلة الحياء والحثّ على التخلق به، لأنّه يحجز صاحبه عن كل معصية ويحمله على امتثال كل طاعة، وحياء المسلم دليل على صدق إيمانه.
The paths of goodness are numerous, and they vary in their degrees and rewards. Faith has levels corresponding to the importance of the deeds it produces. Faith and action are inseparable — neither can be separated from the other, nor can one suffice without the other. "There is no god but Allah" is the most virtuous statement, provided one believes in its meaning and acts according to its implications. It is the key to Paradise and the declaration through which one enters Islam. The virtue of modesty and the encouragement to adopt it as a character trait, for it prevents its possessor from every sin and leads him to fulfill every act of obedience. A Muslim's modesty is a sign of the sincerity of his faith.
