عنْ جابر رضي اللّه عنه قالَ: أَراد بنُو سَلِمَة أَن ينْتَقِلوا قُرْبَ المَسْجِدِ فبلَغَ ذلك رسولَ اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: «إِنَّه قَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكُمْ تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَنْتَقِلُوا قُربَ الْمَسْجِدِ؟» فَقَالُوا: نَعَمْ يا رسولَ اللّه قَدْ أَرَدْنَا ذلكَ، فَقالَ: «بَنِي سَلِمةَ ديارَكُمْ، تُكْتَبْ آثَارُكُمْ، دِيارَكُم، تُكْتَبْ آثارُكُمْ» رواه مسلم. • وفي روايةٍ: «إِنَّ بِكُلِّ خَطْوَةٍ درجةً» رواه مسلم. ورواه البخاري أيضًا بِمعنَاهُ مِنْ روايةِ أَنَسٍ رضي اللّه عنه.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Banu Salimah wanted to move closer to the mosque. When this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), he said to them: "I have heard that you wish to move closer to the mosque." They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we intended to do so." He said: "O Banu Salimah, stay in your homes, for your footsteps are recorded. Stay in your homes, for your footsteps are recorded." Narrated by Muslim. In another narration: "Indeed, with every step you take there is a degree of reward." Narrated by Muslim. Al-Bukhari also narrated it with a similar meaning from the report of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).

بنُو سَلِمَةَ: قبيلة معروفة من الأَنصار رضي اللّه عنهم. ديارَكم: أي الزموا دياركم وابقوا فيها. آثارُكم: خطاكُم إلى المسجد، لحضور الجمعة والجماعات.
"Banu Salimah" is a well-known tribe from among the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with them). "Stay in your homes" (diyarakum) means remain in your homes and do not leave them. "Your footsteps" (atharakum) refers to their steps walking to the mosque to attend Friday prayers and congregational prayers.

أن الأجر على قدر ما يبذله المُكلّف من جُهد يحتاج إليه العمل دون أن يتكلّف زيادة هذا الجهد. الحثّ على صلاة الجماعة في المسجد، لكسب أجورٍ تُضاف إلى أجرِ الصلاة. فضل المشي إلى المساجد، وأن الخطى إليها فيها خير عظيم. عدم التضييق على الناس في مرافقهم العامة كالمساجد ونحوها، لأنّه صلى اللّه عليه وسلم لم يأذن لبني سَلِمة في الانتقال إلى قرب المسجد النبويّ حتى لا يَقتدي بهم الناس ويضيّقوا على المسلمين القريبين منه. دليل على أنّه إذا نُقل للإنسان شيءٌ عن أحد، فعليه أن يتثبّت قبل أن يحكم بمقتضى الشيء الذي نقل له.
Reward corresponds to the effort that the task requires, without deliberately seeking to increase that effort. Encouragement to pray in congregation at the mosque, in order to earn additional rewards on top of the reward of the prayer itself. The merit of walking to the mosques, and that there is great good in every step taken toward them. Avoid crowding people in their public facilities such as mosques and the like, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not permit Banu Salimah to move closer to the Prophet's Mosque so that others would not follow their example and cause congestion for the Muslims already living nearby. Evidence that when something is reported to a person about someone, he should verify it before acting upon what was reported to him.
