عَنْ الْأَغَرِّ بن يَسَار الْمُزَنِيِّ رضي اللّه عنه قال: قال رَسُولَ اللّه صَلَّى اللّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : «يا أيّها الناسُ توبُوا إلى اللّه واستغفروهُ، فإنِّي أتوبُ في اليومِ مِئةَ مرَّةٍ». رواه مسلم.
On the authority of al-Agharr ibn Yasar al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "O people, repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness, for I repent to Him one hundred times a day." Narrated by Muslim.

الاستغفار من النبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم هو لإظهار العبودية للّه تعالى، والشكر له على ما أولاه من النعم. توبته صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم من انشغاله بالأمور المباحة من أكل أو شرب أو جماع أو نوم أو راحة، وذلك تَشريعًا وتعليمًا لأُمَّتِه. لم يقيّد صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم الاستغفار بالعدد؛ فمرة قال: مِئة، ومرة قال: سبعين، ولم يقيّده بوقت، فيستغرق سائر اليوم. أنّ المطلوب كثرة الاستغفار والمسارعة إلى التوبة.
The Prophet's seeking forgiveness (peace be upon him) is a demonstration of servitude to Allah the Most High and gratitude for the blessings He has bestowed. His repentance (peace be upon him) was from preoccupation with permissible matters such as eating, drinking, marital relations, sleep, and rest -- and this was done as legislation and instruction for his community. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not restrict seeking forgiveness to a specific number; at times he said one hundred, at other times seventy, nor did he restrict it to a specific time, so it encompasses the entire day. What is sought is abundance in seeking forgiveness and hastening to repentance.
