عَنْ أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي اللّه عنه قال : سمِعتُ رسول اللّه صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يَقُولُ : « واللّهِ إِنِّي لأَسْتَغْفرُ اللّهَ ، وَأَتُوبُ إِليْه ، في اليَوْمِ ، أَكثرَ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ مرَّةً ». رواه البخاري .
On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "By Allah, I seek Allah's forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day." Narrated by al-Bukhari.

التَّوْبة: الرُّجُوعُ من الذَّنْبِ والخطإ عن كل ما يبعد عن اللّه تعالى.
Repentance (tawbah): Returning from sin and wrongdoing, and from everything that distances one from Allah the Most High.

حضُّ الأمة على التوبة والاستغفار، فإنه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم مع كونه معصومًا وخير الخلائق وقد غفر اللّه له ما تقدّم من ذنبه وما تأخّر يستغفر ويتوب في اليوم سبعين مرة تعليمًا لأمّته، وزيادة في درجاته عند اللّه. الاستمرار في التوبة والاستغفار من شأنه محو الذنوب والآثام التي قد يقع فيها الإنسان من غير أن يشعر. العدد لا يقصد به التحديد، وإنّما المقصود به الكثرة.
This is an encouragement for the entire Muslim community to engage in repentance and seeking forgiveness. For indeed, the Prophet (peace be upon him), despite being infallible and the best of all creation, and despite Allah having forgiven his past and future sins, would seek forgiveness and repent seventy times a day as instruction for his community and to increase his rank with Allah. Continual repentance and seeking forgiveness has the effect of erasing sins and transgressions that a person may unknowingly commit. The number is not meant as a precise limit, but rather to indicate abundance.
