'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man called Kirkirah was in charge of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) baggage. When he died, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "He is in the Fire." They went to look into his belongings and found a cloak that he had stolen from the war spoils. Narrated by al-Bukhari.

Embezzling public wealth is among the major sins for which the perpetrator is punished in the Fire. Proximity to righteous people through kinship or companionship does not protect one from punishment if he commits acts that warrant it. Both minor and major forms of embezzlement from war spoils are prohibited, and it is among the major sins.
