عن عمر بن الخطاب رضي اللّه عنه قال: لمَّا كان يوْمُ خيْبرَ أَقْبل نَفرٌ مِنْ أَصْحابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم فَقَالُوا: فُلانٌ شَهِيدٌ، وفُلانٌ شهِيدٌ، حتَّى مَرُّوا علَى رَجُلٍ فقالوا: فلانٌ شهِيد. فقال النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «كلّا إِنِّي رَأَيْتُهُ فِي النَّارِ فِي بُرْدَةٍ غَلَّها أَوْ عبَاءَةٍ» رواه مسلم.
'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: On the day of Khaybar, a group of the Prophet's Companions (peace be upon him) came and said: "So-and-so is a martyr, and so-and-so is a martyr," until they passed by a man and said: "So-and-so is a martyr." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "No! I saw him in the Fire wearing a cloak — or a garment — that he had embezzled." Narrated by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
نفر: جماعة من الرجال، ويطلق على ما دون العشرة. كلّا: أداة ردع وزجر، أي انتهوا وانزجروا عن هذا القول والحكم له بالشهادة. رأيته: الظاهر أنّه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم اطلع على ما يكون من حاله يوم القيامة نتيجة خيانته.
A group (nafar): a number of men, typically used for fewer than ten. No (kalla): a word of rebuke and censure, meaning: cease and desist from this statement and from declaring him a martyr. I saw him (ra'aytuhu): it appears that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was shown what the man's condition would be on the Day of Resurrection as a result of his betrayal.

تحريم الغلول فإنَّه من الكبائر. عِظَمُ ذنب الخيانة في الأموال العامة، وشدّة عقابها. الشهادة في سبيل اللّه تعالى لا تكفّر حقوق العباد. الغلول يمنع إطلاق اسم الشهادة على من غلَّ.
Embezzlement from war spoils is prohibited and is among the major sins. The enormity of the sin of betrayal in public wealth, and the severity of its punishment. Martyrdom in the cause of Allah does not atone for the rights of others. Embezzlement prevents the title of martyrdom from being applied to the one who embezzled.
