Abu Qatadah al-Harith ibn Rib'i (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood among them and mentioned that jihad in the cause of Allah and belief in Allah are the best of deeds. A man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you think that if I am killed in the cause of Allah, my sins will be expiated?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him: "Yes, if you are killed in the cause of Allah while you are patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "What did you say?" The man repeated: "Do you think that if I am killed in the cause of Allah, my sins will be expiated?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Yes, while you are patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating — except for debt, for Jibril (Gabriel) told me that." Narrated by Muslim.

The virtue of jihad for the sake of raising the Word of Allah, the Most High. The immense reward for one who is killed while striving against the enemies of Allah, the Almighty. Martyrdom in the cause of Allah — with its conditions — expiates all sins except for debt and other rights owed to people, when one was able to fulfill them but did not. The emphasis on the matter of debt, urging people to hasten in repaying their debts and not to procrastinate. Jihad, martyrdom, and other righteous deeds do not expiate the rights owed to other people; rather, they expiate the rights owed to Allah, the Most High. Deeds are of no benefit without sincere intention and devotion to Allah, the Most High.
