عن عائشة رضي اللّه عنها قالَتْ: نَهَاهُمُ النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم عَن الْوِصَال رَحْمةً لهُم، فقالوا: إِنَّكَ تُواصلُ؟ قال: «إِنِّي لَسْتُ كَهَيئَتِكُمْ إِنِّي أَبِيتُ يُطْعِمُني رَبِّي ويَسْقِيني» متفقٌ عليه.
'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade them from continuous fasting (wisal) out of mercy for them. They said: "But you fast continuously!" He said: "I am not like any of you. I spend the night while my Lord feeds me and gives me drink." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

الوصال: هو أن لا يتناول الصائم شيئًا مُفطّرًا بين الصومين، وهو وصل صوم اليوم باليوم الذي بعده دون فطر أو سحور. يُطْعِمُني رَبِّي ويَسْقِيني: أي يجعَلُ فيَّ قُوَّةَ مَنْ أَكَلَ وَشَرِبَ.
Continuous fasting (al-wisal): fasting without breaking the fast between two consecutive days — meaning joining one day's fast to the next without eating or taking a pre-dawn meal. My Lord feeds me and gives me drink (yut'imuni Rabbi wa-yasqini): meaning He grants me the strength of one who has eaten and drunk.

النهي في الحديث للتحريم، فيَحرُم الوصال في الصوم، والحكمة في ذلك دفع الضعف والملل، والعجز عن المواظبة على بقية العبادات. الوصال في الصوم من خصائص النّبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم. للنّبيّ صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم خصائص في العبادات وغيرها وهو ما ورد الدليل فيه بأنّه خاص، أما ما لم يرد فيه دليل فالأصل أن نتأسى به فيه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم. حسْبُ المسلمين أن يلتزموا ما أُمِروا به، ويَدَعوا ما نُهُوا عنه من غير زيادة ولا نقصان ففي ذلك الخير الكثير والفوز الكبير.
The prohibition in the hadith is one of strict prohibition (tahrim); continuous fasting is forbidden. The wisdom behind this is to ward off weakness, weariness, and inability to maintain other acts of worship. Continuous fasting is among the exclusive privileges of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) has unique privileges in worship and other matters where evidence indicates exclusivity. As for matters where no such evidence exists, the general principle is that we should follow his example (peace be upon him). It is sufficient for Muslims to adhere to what they have been commanded and to abandon what they have been prohibited from, without adding or subtracting — for in that lies abundant goodness and great triumph.
