Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with both of them) said: I memorized from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt, for truthfulness brings tranquility and lying brings doubt." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: It is an authentic (sahih) hadith.

It is recommended to abstain from doubtful matters and confine oneself to what is clearly permissible, for whoever avoids doubtful matters has safeguarded his religion and honor. Truthfulness instills in its possessor tranquility of the heart, courage, self-respect, and the trust of people. Lying instills in its possessor doubt, hesitation, fear, humiliation, degradation, and loss of trust among people. Whatever is ambiguous to a person, leaving them uncertain whether it is permissible or prohibited, the appropriate course is to leave it and turn to what one knows to be permissible, whether in worldly or religious matters. This hadith is among the comprehensive words of the Prophet, and among his eloquent prophetic wisdoms. With its few words, it established an important legal maxim that applies to many areas of rulings. The text of the maxim is: 'Certainty is not removed by doubt' -- so we discard doubt and take what is certain.
