Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to be truthful until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person (siddiq). Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Hellfire. A man continues to lie until he is recorded with Allah as a liar." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim).

Encouragement toward truthfulness because it is the cause of every good, and warning against lying because it is the cause of every evil. Whoever becomes known for a quality may rightly be described by it. Reward and punishment are based upon what a person does of good or evil deeds. The consequence of truthfulness is Paradise and the consequence of lying is the Hellfire. Truthfulness occurs in speech that conforms to reality, and in deeds by performing them in the best manner.
