It is important to preserve the secrets and private matters between spouses. A man is not asked why he struck his wife, because the reasons may involve matters that are embarrassing to mention, or matters that should be kept confidential. Some scholars held that the hadith is specific to the man known for piety and good treatment of his wife, unlike one known for mistreatment, who should be questioned. Other scholars judged the hadith to be weak and thus did not need to address its implications. If matters are brought before the courts and questioning is needed, then it must take place in order to establish what is right or to reconcile between the spouses.
