Abu 'Imarah al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "O so-and-so, when you retire to your bed, say: 'O Allah, I have submitted my soul to You, turned my face to You, entrusted my affair to You, and leaned my back upon You, in hope of You and in fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.' For if you die that night, you will die upon the natural disposition (fitrah), and if you reach the morning, you will attain good." Agreed upon (narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration in the two Sahih collections, al-Bara' said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me: "When you go to your bed, perform ablution as you would for prayer, then lie on your right side and say..." and he mentioned something similar, then added: "And make these words the last thing you say."

His instruction to lie on the right side: because the heart is on the left side, so if a person sleeps on his left side, the sleep will be heavier. If he sleeps on his right side, his heart will be suspended, making him more likely to wake up and sleep more lightly. Physicians have stated that sleeping on the right side is better for the body and healthier than sleeping on the left side. It is recommended to perform ablution before sleeping. Tawakkul (true reliance) is entrusting one's affairs to one's Lord, and seeking no refuge or deliverance from Allah except through Allah. When fear is combined with love, this is perfection. If a servant is driven by fear alone without hope, this may lead to despair and hopelessness. Rather, one should combine both -- hope and fear: hope in what is with Allah and fear of His punishment. Whoever fears Allah flees to Him and turns to Him. When a servant commits sins and wrongs, and fears overwhelm him, the way forward is to turn to his Lord, come to Him, and flee to Him.
