Umm Kulthum bint ʿUqbah ibn Abi Muʿayṭ (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, "He who reconciles between people, conveying good or saying something good, is not a liar." [Agreed upon]
In a narration of Muslim she added: "I never heard him permit anything of what people say except in three matters — meaning: war, reconciliation between people, and what a man says to his wife and what a wife says to her husband." "Yanmī": conveys good; it is said 'namā al-ḥadīth' when one conveys speech in a way that reconciles, whereas 'nammā' (with emphasis) means conveying it in a way that causes corruption. "Yurakhkhiṣ": permits as a concession. "What a man says to his wife": as when he says 'no one is more beloved to me than you,' and she says the same to him.

It is permissible to speak untruthfully to reconcile between people — for example, by reporting to each side what would soften the other's hostility — and this concession shows the great importance of reconciliation. Lying is fundamentally forbidden; it is permitted by way of concession in these three matters only because of the great benefit that results. Lying may even become obligatory at times, when it saves a person from destruction.
