Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "A Muslim is a brother to another Muslim: he does not betray him, nor lie to him, nor forsake him. Everything of a Muslim is inviolable to another Muslim: his honor, his wealth, and his blood. Piety is here. It is enough evil for a person to look down upon his Muslim brother." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who graded it as a good (hasan) hadith.

"He does not betray him" (la yakhuunuhu): meaning he does not diminish his rights, being trustworthy with him in all that requires trust. "Nor lie to him" (la yakdhibuhu): meaning he does not tell him something contrary to reality. "Nor forsake him" (la yakhdhuluhu): meaning he does not abandon his support and aid. "His honor" ('irduhu): meaning his lineage and ancestral distinctions, which should not be violated through insults or backbiting. "Enough" (bi-hasb): meaning sufficient.

The blood, wealth, and honor of a Muslim are inviolable. Looking down upon a Muslim is prohibited and is among the gravest of sins, for a Muslim has sanctity in the sight of Allah the Most High. Forsaking a Muslim is most strictly forbidden for one who is capable of supporting the oppressed and repelling his oppressor.
