Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Do not envy one another, do not inflate prices for one another, do not hate one another, do not turn away from one another, and do not undercut one another in sales. Be, O servants of Allah, brothers. A Muslim is a brother to another Muslim: he does not wrong him, nor look down upon him, nor forsake him. Piety is here" — pointing to his chest three times — "It is enough evil for a person to look down upon his Muslim brother. Every Muslim's blood, wealth, and honor are inviolable to another Muslim." Narrated by Muslim.

"Do not envy one another" (la tahasadu): meaning do not let some of you envy others. Envy (hasad) is disliking seeing blessings bestowed upon others, whether one wishes for their removal or not. There is scholarly consensus on its reprehensibility. "Do not inflate prices" (la tanajashu): Najsh is to raise the price of a commodity being auctioned in the marketplace with no intention of buying it, but rather to deceive and mislead others — this is forbidden. "Do not hate one another" (la tabaghadhu): meaning do not let some of you hate others, by abandoning the causes of hatred. "Do not turn away from one another" (la tadabaru): meaning do not shun one another. Tadabur is to turn away from a person, abandon him, and treat him as something behind one's back.

The prohibition of envy, as it involves objecting to Allah the Most High and opposing His decree. The prohibition of najsh (bid-rigging) because it involves deception and fraud. The prohibition of shunning, which is abandoning communication for more than three days without a valid religious reason. The prohibition of selling over another's sale: its form is when a man says to someone who has purchased a commodity during the option period: "Cancel your purchase and I will sell you something better at the same price, or the same for less." Similarly, buying over another's purchase is also prohibited. Islam is a comprehensive unity of creed, dealings, worship, and morals — none is sufficient without the others, and they all converge under the concept of piety (taqwa), whose seat is the heart.
