Abu Mas'ud Uqbah ibn Amr al-Badri al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to touch our shoulders in the prayer and say: "Make your rows straight and do not differ, lest your hearts differ. Let those of you who are mature and possessed of understanding stand nearest to me, then those who are next to them, then those who are next to them." [Reported by Muslim]
Our shoulders (manakibana): manakib is the plural of mankib, which is the joint where the head of the shoulder meets the upper arm. Stand nearest to me (li-yalini): let him draw close to me in the prayer. Understanding (al-nuha): the intellects. Those possessed of maturity (ulu al-ahlam): they are those who have reached puberty; and it is said: the people of forbearance and merit.
Giving precedence to the most excellent, then the next most excellent, so that they stand directly behind the imam in the prayer, because the imam may need someone to take his place, and such a person would be most fitting for it, and because he is alert to drawing the imam's attention to any lapse that others may not notice. The people of merit are given precedence in the prayer, and all the more so in matters of lesser import among the affairs of the Muslims. The exhortation to straighten the rows in prayer and to give them due care, for crookedness of the rows is a cause for the differing of hearts. In the straightening of the rows and the close alignment of shoulders there is an indication of the unity of the ranks within the ummah and the unity of its word.
