عن ابن عُمرَ رضي اللهُ عنهما أَنَّ النبيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ قال: «أَرَاني في المَنَامِ أَتَسَوَّكُ بِسِوَاكٍ، فَجَاءَنِي رَجُلانِ، أَحدُهُمَا أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الآخَرِ، فَنَاوَلْتُ السِّوَاكَ الأَصْغَرَ، فقيلَ لي: كَبِّرْ، فَدَفَعْتُهُ إِلى الأَكْبَرِ مِنْهُمَا» رواه مسلم والبخاريُّ تعلِيقًا.
Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I saw myself in a dream cleaning my teeth with a tooth-stick (siwak), when two men came to me, one older than the other. I handed the siwak to the younger one, but it was said to me: 'Give precedence to the elder,' so I handed it to the older of the two." Reported by Muslim, and by al-Bukhari in suspended form (ta'liq).

تقديم الأكبر سنًّا في كلّ أمر كريم؛ كذلك في الطعام والشراب والمشي والكلام. استعمال السواك أمر له شأن في الإسلام، وقد حرص عليه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى في آخر لحظات حياته.
Giving precedence to the elder in every honourable matter, likewise in eating, drinking, walking, and speaking. Using the tooth-stick (siwak) is a matter of significance in Islam, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was keen on it even in the final moments of his life.
