Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would join two men from among those slain at Uhud—that is, in a single grave—and then would say: "Which of them had retained more of the Qur'an?" And when one of them was pointed out to him, he would place him foremost in the lahd (the lateral niche of the grave). [Reported by al-Bukhari]
الشرح · explanation

Had retained more of the Qur'an: that is, had memorized more of the Qur'an. He would place him foremost in the lahd: he would place him in the niche that is on the side of the grave facing the direction of the qiblah.
The permissibility of burying two or three men in a single grave in case of necessity. Giving precedence to the one who had memorized more of the Qur'an over the one of lesser memorization, placing him toward the direction of the qiblah when burying in the grave, as an honoring and ennobling of the one who memorized the Qur'an.
