Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People are like mines, like mines of gold and silver: the best of them in the time of ignorance are the best of them in Islam, when they gain understanding of the religion. Souls are like conscripted soldiers: those of them that recognize one another come together in harmony, and those of them that fail to recognize one another fall into discord." Reported by Muslim. Al-Bukhari narrated his words "Souls are..." to the end of it from the narration of A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
"Mines" (ma'adin): the plural of ma'din, which is the substance settled within the earth; at times it is precious and at other times worthless. Likewise people: there appears from some of them what is in their root of baseness or nobility. "The best of them in the time of ignorance": their noblest in it, and the Jahiliyyah is the period before Islam, and its people were named thus on account of the abundance of their ignorant practices in it. "They gain understanding" (faqihu): that is, they came to know; and it is said: understanding of the religion became their second nature. "Conscripted soldiers": gathered multitudes and varied kinds. "Those of them that recognize one another come together in harmony": an allusion to the meaning of resemblance in good and in evil; the good person inclines toward his like and counterpart, and the wicked person likewise inclines toward his match.

The noble qualities of the time of ignorance are of no account unless their possessors embrace Islam, gain understanding of the religion, and perform righteous deeds. Souls recognize one another according to the natures upon which they were created, whether good or evil; when they agree they recognize one another, and when they differ they fail to recognize one another. If a person finds within himself an aversion to people of merit and righteousness, he should search out the cause of this so that he may strive to rid himself of it, and likewise the reverse.
