Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Exalted, said: 'Whoever shows enmity to a friend (wali) of Mine, I declare war upon him. My servant draws near to Me with nothing more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him. My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary acts of worship until I love him, and when I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he grasps, and his foot with which he walks. If he asks of Me, I will surely give him, and if he seeks refuge in Me, I will surely grant him refuge.'" [al-Bukhari]

"I declare war upon him" (adhantuhu): I have informed him that I am at war with him. "He seeks refuge in Me" (ista'adhani): he seeks My protection and safeguarding. "A friend" (waliyyan): the wali is the one who is close to Allah, on account of his drawing near to Him through faith in Him and piety toward Him. "I become his hearing": that is, I become the protector of his hearing and his limbs from being used in anything other than the obedience of Allah; or it is a metaphor for Allah's support of His servant and His aiding of him.

The performance of the obligatory duties is the most beloved of deeds to Allah. A servant's claim of love for Allah must manifest itself through doing what Allah loves, namely the obligatory duties and then the voluntary acts. The highest goal a Muslim should be keen on is that Allah love him; so we ought to strive to attain it. The Muslim attains the love of Allah, the Exalted, by performing the obligatory duties fully and being diligent about them, for they take precedence over the voluntary acts. Part of the completeness of performing voluntary acts is to perform them in accordance with the Sunnah. Allah answers the supplication of His believing, pious servants, for they are His friends (awliya), and He takes vengeance upon whoever shows enmity toward them.
