Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "When Allah, the Exalted, loves a servant, He calls out to Gabriel: 'Allah, the Exalted, loves so-and-so, so love him.' Then Gabriel loves him. Then Gabriel calls out among the inhabitants of heaven: 'Allah loves so-and-so, so love him.' Then the inhabitants of heaven love him. Then acceptance is established for him on earth." [Agreed upon] In a narration of Muslim: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah, the Exalted, loves a servant, He calls Gabriel and says: 'I love so-and-so, so love him.' Then Gabriel loves him. Then he calls out in heaven, saying: 'Allah loves so-and-so, so love him.' Then the inhabitants of heaven love him. Then acceptance is established for him on earth. And when He detests a servant, He calls Gabriel and says: 'I detest so-and-so, so detest him.' Then Gabriel detests him. Then he calls out among the inhabitants of heaven: 'Allah detests so-and-so, so detest him.' Then the inhabitants of heaven detest him. Then hatred is established for him on earth."

"The inhabitants of heaven" (ahl al-sama): that is, the angels. "Acceptance is established for him" (yuda'u lahu al-qabul): that is, love and contentment in the hearts of the people of religion, goodness, and righteousness, just as Allah brought this about for the righteous among the early generations of this nation, such as Abu Bakr, Umar, and many of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).

The standard in a person's being loved or hated is the verdict of the people of virtue and goodness. The dislike of the corrupt for a righteous man, and their love for the corrupt like themselves, does not detract from this; for the believer sees by the light of Allah and loves whomever Allah loves. The Muslim should be keen to please Allah, the Exalted, and to attain His love, for through it the love of the inhabitants of heaven and the people of earth is gained. He should not strive to be loved by people in a way that leads him to commit certain sins and forbidden acts; for the result of that would be Allah's detestation of him, then hatred being established for him on earth, so that he neither pleased Allah nor were people pleased with him.
