عن ابنِ مسعودٍ رضي اللهُ عنهُ قال: حدثنا رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم وهو الصَّادِقُ المصدوقُ: «إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ يُجْمَعُ خَلْقُهُ في بَطْنِ أُمِّهِ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ عَلَقَةً مِثْلَ ذلِكَ، ثُمَّ يَكُونُ مُضْغَةً مثْلَ ذلِكَ، ثُمَّ يُرْسَلُ المَلَكُ، فَيَنْفُخُ فِيهِ الرَّوحَ، وَيُؤْمَرُ بِأَرْبَعِ كَلِماتٍ: بِكَتْبِ رِزقِةِ، وَأَجلِهِ، وَعمَلِهِ، وَشَقيٌّ أَوْ سعِيدٌ، فَوَالَّذِي لا إِلهَ غَيْرُهُ؛ إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَعْمَلُ بعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الجَنَّةِ حَتَّى مَا يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُ وبَيْنَهَا إِلاَّ ذِراعٌ، فَيَسْبقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتابُ، فَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ، فَيَدْخُلُهَا، وَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ حَتَّى مَا يَكُونُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهَا إِلاَّ ذِرَاعٌ، فَيَسْبِقُ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابُ، فَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الجَنَّةِ فَيَدْخُلُهَا» متفقٌ عليه.
Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who is the truthful and the trusted, narrated to us: "Indeed, the creation of each one of you is gathered in his mother's womb for forty days, then he becomes a clinging clot for a similar period, then he becomes a lump of flesh for a similar period. Then the angel is sent, and he breathes the soul into him, and is commanded with four matters: to record his provision, his appointed term, his deeds, and whether he will be wretched or happy. By the One besides whom there is no god, one of you may do the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is between him and it only a cubit, and then what is written overtakes him, so he does the deeds of the people of the Fire and enters it. And one of you may do the deeds of the people of the Fire until there is between him and it only a cubit, and then what is written overtakes him, so he does the deeds of the people of Paradise and enters it." الشرح · explanation
خلقه: مادة خلقه، أو ما يخلق منه. بطن أمّه: المراد الرَّحِم. يكون: يصير. علقة: دمًا جامدًا، وسمّيت كذلك لتعلقها بجدار الرَّحم في هذه المرحلة. مضغة: قدر ما يُمضغ من قطعة اللّحم. رزقه: ما ينتفع به في حياته. أجله: مدة عمره. عمله: ما يكون منه من عمل صالح وضده. شقي أو سعيد: هل هو من أهل النجاة والسعادة، أو من أهل الشقاء. ذراع: أي مسافة ذراع، والمقصود أنّه صار قريبًا من نهاية أجله ودخوله للجنّة أو النّار. الكتاب: ما سبق في علم الله وكتبه تعالى في اللوح المحفوظ من أنّ هذا المخلوق سيكون من أمره كذا وكذا.
"His creation": the substance of his creation, or that from which he is created. "His mother's womb": what is meant is the uterus. "He becomes": he turns into. "A clinging clot": congealed blood, so named because of its clinging to the wall of the womb at this stage. "A lump of flesh": the measure of what is chewed of a piece of flesh. "His provision": what he benefits from in his life. "His appointed term": the span of his life. "His deeds": the righteous deeds and their opposite that come from him. "Wretched or happy": whether he is among the people of salvation and happiness, or among the people of wretchedness. "A cubit": that is, the distance of a cubit, meaning that he has come close to the end of his term and his entry into Paradise or the Fire. "What is written": what was decreed in Allah's knowledge and recorded by Him Most High in the Preserved Tablet, that the affair of this creature will be such and such.
