Abu Najih 'Amr ibn 'Abasah al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the days of ignorance (before Islam), I used to think that the people were upon misguidance and that they were upon nothing, for they worshipped idols. Then I heard of a man in Mecca who was conveying tidings, so I sat upon my riding-camel and came to him. There was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), keeping himself hidden, for his people were emboldened against him. I made my way gently until I came in to him at Mecca, and I said to him: "What are you?" He said: "I am a Prophet." I said: "And what is a Prophet?" He said: "Allah has sent me." I said: "With what has He sent you?" He said: "He has sent me to maintain the ties of kinship, to break the idols, and that Allah be declared One, with nothing associated with Him." I said: "Who is with you upon this?" He said: "A free man and a slave." With him that day were Abu Bakr and Bilal (may Allah be pleased with both of them). I said: "I will follow you." He said: "You will not be able to do that this day of yours. Do you not see my situation and the situation of the people? But return to your family, and when you hear that I have prevailed, then come to me." He said: So I went back to my family, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Medina while I was with my family. I began seeking out the news and asking people about him after he reached Medina, until a group of my people came to Medina. I said: "What has this man who came to Medina done?" They said: "The people are hastening to him; his own people wanted to kill him, but they were not able to." So I came to Medina and entered upon him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you recognize me?" He said: "Yes, you are the one who met me at Mecca." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, tell me of what Allah has taught you and which I do not know. Tell me about prayer." He said: "Pray the dawn prayer, then refrain from prayer until the sun rises to the height of a spear, for it rises between the two horns of a devil, and at that moment the disbelievers prostrate to it. Then pray, for prayer is witnessed and attended (by the angels) until the shadow stands straight along the spear. Then refrain from prayer, for at that moment Hellfire is stoked up. Then when the shadow turns (after midday), pray, for prayer is witnessed and attended until you pray the afternoon prayer. Then refrain from prayer until the sun sets, for it sets between the two horns of a devil, and at that moment the disbelievers prostrate to it." I said: "O Prophet of Allah, and ablution — tell me about it." He said: "There is no man among you who brings his ablution water near, then rinses his mouth and sniffs water into his nose and blows it out, except that the sins of his face, his mouth, and his nostrils fall away. Then when he washes his face as Allah commanded him, the sins of his face fall away with the water from the edges of his beard. Then he washes his hands up to the elbows, and the sins of his hands fall away from his fingertips with the water. Then he wipes his head, and the sins of his head fall away from the ends of his hair with the water. Then he washes his feet up to the ankles, and the sins of his feet fall away from his toes with the water. Then if he stands and prays, praising Allah, the Exalted, extolling Him and glorifying Him as He deserves, and emptying his heart for Allah, the Exalted, he departs from his sin like the day his mother bore him." 'Amr ibn 'Abasah related this hadith to Abu Umamah, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Abu Umamah said to him: "O 'Amr ibn 'Abasah, consider what you are saying! Is all this given to a man in a single standing?" 'Amr said: "O Abu Umamah, my age has grown old, my bones have weakened, and my appointed term has drawn near. I have no need to lie about Allah, the Exalted, nor about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Had I heard it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) only once, or twice, or three times" — until he counted seven times — "I would never have related it; but I heard it more than that." Reported by Muslim.

The wise method of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in calling to Islam and his consideration of the circumstances of his companions, as he directed Abu Najih to return to his people with his Islam and stay among them, out of fear for him from the harm of Quraysh. The merit of Abu Bakr and Bilal (may Allah be pleased with both of them) for their precedence in embracing Islam and supporting the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The confidence of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in Allah regarding victory and triumph over the polytheists. Asking the people of knowledge about the rulings of the religion. The hadith is among the signs of his prophethood (peace and blessings be upon him), for he informed Abu Najih that Islam would be victorious and prevail, and it came to pass as he said. Ablution and prayer are an expiation for the minor sins that have been committed. The recommendation of humble devotion (khushu') in prayer, and the attendance of the angels at the prayer. A clarification of the times in which prayer is disliked. The rising and setting of the sun between the two horns of the devil is to be understood in its literal sense.
