Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Exalted, stretches out His Hand by night so that the one who sinned by day may repent, and He stretches out His Hand by day so that the one who sinned by night may repent — until the sun rises from its place of setting." Reported by Muslim.
"He stretches out His Hand by night": al-bast means extending. His stretching out of His Hand, glory be to Him, is an attribute among His attributes that befits His Essence. It has also been said that it means that He, the Exalted, accepts the repentance of those who repent by night and by day.
