Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the bier is placed down and the people, or the men, carry it upon their shoulders, if it was righteous it says: 'Take me forward, take me forward!' And if it was not righteous, it says: 'O woe to it! Where are you taking it?' Everything hears its voice except mankind, and were he to hear it, he would fall down dead." Reported by al-Bukhari.
"the bier is placed down": that is, set before the men so that they may carry it. "al-janazah": that is, the deceased. "Take me forward": hasten with me. "O woe to it (ya waylaha)": al-wayl is destruction; it is a word expressing distress and lamentation. "falls down dead (sa'iqa)": that is, he dies, on account of the intensity of the voice he hears.

That Allah, the Exalted, shows His servants their abodes and what He has prepared for them in this state, so the believer longs for the honor prepared for him, while the disbeliever and the corrupt one is anguished at the painful punishment he anticipates. That some sounds are heard by other than mankind, while mankind is unable to hear them. What is prescribed in carrying the bier is that it be done by men. It is from the prophetic Sunnah to hasten the preparation of the deceased and his burial.
