عن عَبْدِ اللهِ بنِ مسعودٍ رضيَ اللهُ عنه قال: قالَ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «لا تَتَّخِذُوا الضَّيْعَةَ فَتَرْغَبُوا في الدُّنْيا». رواه الترمذي وقال: حديثٌ حسنٌ.
'Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not take up estates, lest you become desirous of this world." [Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan hadith]
الشرح · explanation
الضيعة: العقار ومال الرجل من النّخل وغيرها، وما يكون منه معاش الرجل كالصنعة والتجارة والزراعة. فترغبوا في الدنيا: أي في صلاحها، فتنشغلوا بذلك عن صلاح الآخرة.
Al-day'ah: real estate and a man's property such as palm groves and the like, and that from which a man derives his livelihood, such as craft, trade, and farming. Fa-targhabu fi al-dunya: meaning in its improvement and cultivation, so that you become preoccupied with that at the expense of the welfare of the Hereafter.

النهي عن الاستكثار من الضياع والانصراف إليها بالقلب لأن ذلك يفضي بصاحبه إلى الركون إلى الدنيا، أما الذي يتخذ من العقار ما يسد كفايته فليس بمنهي عنه.
A prohibition against amassing estates and turning the heart toward them, because this leads a person to incline toward this world; as for one who acquires of real estate only what meets his needs, that is not prohibited.
