Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Umamah Iyas ibn Tha'labah al-Ansari al-Harithi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) one day mentioned worldly matters in his presence, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not hear? Do you not hear? Plainness of dress is part of faith; plainness of dress is part of faith" — meaning austerity of living. Reported by Abu Dawud.

Plainness of dress (al-badhadhah): that is, austerity of living, shabbiness of appearance, roughness of living, and the abandonment of fine garments and luxury.

Encouragement toward simplicity of living and reducing worldly adornment and indulgence in it, for absorption in pleasures generally holds a person back from seeking perfection in religion and weakens him from striving against his self for the sake of Allah. Accustoming the self to roughness of living does not mean abandoning cleanliness, for cleanliness is among the requisites of faith; nor does it mean abandoning good grooming when it is not mixed with pride and arrogance. What is meant by plainness of dress is not deliberately tearing clothes and then patching them, nor abandoning moderate dress when one is able to afford it; rather, what is meant is that the Muslim should not preoccupy himself with this. The conduct of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bears witness to this, for he wore moderate, beautiful, clean garments, while he was the most perfect of people in faith.
