Abu Karimah al-Miqdam ibn Ma'dikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "No human being fills a vessel worse than his stomach. A few morsels that keep his back straight are enough for the son of Adam. But if he must, then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a good hadith.

Guidance toward reducing food, for excessive eating causes sluggishness and ruins health. Among the manifestations of asceticism in this world is moderating and reducing food and drink; this does not mean turning away entirely from delicious foods and drinks. The hadith contains a pointer to the method of struggling against the self and disciplining it: the Muslim restrains himself from something he intensely desires — namely, satiety and taking the largest amount of delicious food — and this helps in mastering the self and its desires and bending it toward what pleases Allah Most High.
