عَنْ أبي سعيدٍ الخُدريِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قال: بينَمَا نَحْنُ في سَفَرٍ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم إِذ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ على رَاحِلَةٍ لَهُ، فَجَعَلَ يَصْرفُ بَصَرَهُ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا، فَقَال رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ فَضْلُ ظَهرٍ فَليَعُدْ بِهِ عَلى مَنْ لا ظَهْرَ لَهُ، وَمَن كانَ لَهُ فَضْلٌ مِن زَادٍ فَليَعُدْ بِهِ على مَن لا زَادَ لَهُ» فَذَكَرَ مِن أَصْنَافِ المَالِ مَا ذَكَرَ، حَتَّى رَأَيْنَا أَنَّهُ لا حَقَّ لأحدٍ مِنَّا في فَضْلٍ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِم.
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: While we were on a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a man came on his mount and began to glance right and left. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever has a spare mount, let him give it to one who has no mount; and whoever has spare provisions, let him give them to one who has no provisions." And he kept mentioning kinds of property until we thought that none of us had any right to a surplus. Reported by Muslim.

راحلة: هي المركب من الإبل. فضل ظهر: مركوب زائد عن حاجته. فَجَعَلَ يَصْرفُ بَصَرَهُ يَمِينًا وَشِمَالًا: أي يلتفت باحثا عمن يطعمه، أو يعينه، أو نحو ذلك، بحسب حاجته. زاد: ما يُتزود به من طعام وغيره.
A mount (rahilah): a riding-camel. A spare mount: a riding-beast beyond his need. He began to glance right and left: that is, looking about for someone to feed him, or assist him, or the like, according to his need. Provisions (zad): what one takes along of food and the like.

الحثّ على التعاون والتكافل في الأزمات وأوقات الشدّة. عدم اقتصار التعاون في الأزمات على الطعام فقط بل كل ما يمكن مشاركته من المركب والملبس والمسكن ونحوه. تميّز الإسلام عن غيره من النُّظم في توجيه المسلمين إلى التعاون وبذل الزائد عن الكفاية أوقات الحاجة والأزمات. حسن تلطُّف النّبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم في معاملته لأصحابه فقد عرف حاجتهم ولم يحرجهم بذكر صاحب الحاجة، بل وجّه الكلام بصورة عامّة.
Encouragement toward cooperation and mutual support in crises and times of hardship. That cooperation in crises is not limited to food alone, but includes everything that can be shared -- mounts, clothing, shelter, and the like. Islam's distinction over other systems in directing Muslims toward cooperation and giving away what is surplus to one's needs in times of need and crisis. The excellence of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) gentleness in dealing with his Companions: he knew their need yet did not embarrass them by naming the one in need, but rather addressed the matter in general terms.
