عَنْ أَنس رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قال: خَطَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم خُطُوطًا فقال: «هَذا الْأَمَلُ، وَهَذا أَجَلُهُ، فَبَيْنَما هو كَذَلِكَ، إِذْ جَاءَ الخَطُّ الأَقْرَبُ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew some lines and said, "This is hope, and this is its appointed term; and while he is in that state, the nearer line arrives." Reported by al-Bukhari.
الشرح · explanation
الأمل: أي أمل الإنسان بطول الحياة. فبينما هو كذلك: أي في أمل وغفلة. الخط الأقرب: أي الأجل.
Hope (al-amal): meaning a person's hope for a long life. While he is in that state (fa-baynama huwa kadhalik): meaning amid hope and heedlessness. The nearer line (al-khatt al-aqrab): meaning the appointed term (of death).

The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) use of drawing as a teaching method. Death takes a person by surprise, for no one knows when his appointed term will come. The wise person should constantly remember death and prepare for it through righteous deeds.
