عنْ أبي هُريرةَ رضيَ اللهُ عنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قالَ: «لا يَتَمَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ المَوْتَ إِمَّا مُحسِنًا فَلَعَلَّهُ يَزْدادُ، وَإِمَّا مُسِيئًا فَلَعَلَّهُ يَسْتَعْتِبُ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ، وهذا لفظُ الْبُخَارِيّ. وفي روايةِ مُسْلِمٍ: عنْ أبي هُريْرةَ رضيَ اللهُ عنْهُ، عَنْ رسُولِ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «لا يَتَمَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ المَوْتَ، وَلا يَدْعُ بِهِ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُ، إِنَّهُ إِذا ماتَ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ، وَإِنَّهُ لا يَزيدُ المُؤْمِنَ عُمُرُهُ إِلَّا خَيرًا».
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let none of you wish for death. If he is a doer of good, perhaps he will increase in good; and if he is a wrongdoer, perhaps he will seek to make amends." Agreed upon, and this is the wording of al-Bukhari. In the narration of Muslim: Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let none of you wish for death, nor pray for it before it comes to him. For when he dies his deeds come to an end, and the life of a believer only increases him in good."

لا يتمنّ: المقصود منه النهي. محسنًا: مطيعًا لله. يستعتب: يرجع إلى الله تعالى بالتوبة ورد المظالم، وطلب رضا الله تعالى.
"Let none of you wish": this carries the meaning of a prohibition. "A doer of good": one who is obedient to Allah. "Seek to make amends" (yasta'tib): to return to Allah Most High through repentance, restoring what is owed to others, and seeking the pleasure of Allah Most High.

النهي عن تمني الإنسان الموت وطلبه من الله تعالى قبل أن ينزل به، لأنّ زيادة العمر في تقوى الله تعالى فيها زيادة في الحسنات. على المسلم أن يغتنم حياته في الدنيا ليتزود منها بالأعمال الصالحة، وإن قصّر حينًا فيستدرك حينًا آخر، حتى ولو آخر لحظة من عمره. الحثّ على الصبر عند نزول المصائب وعدم تمنّي الموت إلا إذا خاف المرء أن يفتن في دينه. الأصل ألّا يتمنّى الإنسان الموت لأنّه يفوِّت على نفسه الخير المرجوّ كالتوبة والاستغفار.
The prohibition of a person wishing for death and asking Allah Most High for it before it befalls him, because an increase in lifespan spent in the fear of Allah Most High brings an increase in good deeds. The Muslim should make the most of his life in this world to provision himself with righteous deeds; and if he falls short at one time, he can make it up at another, even in the last moment of his life. Encouragement to be patient when afflictions befall, and not to wish for death unless one fears being tried in his religion. The basic principle is that a person should not wish for death, because in doing so he deprives himself of the hoped-for good, such as repentance and seeking forgiveness.
