عَنِ ابنِ عمرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ قالَ: «مَنْ جَرَّ ثَوْبَهُ خُيَلاءَ لَمْ يَنْظُرِ اللهُ إِليْهِ يَوْمَ القِيَامَةِ» فقالَ أَبو بكرٍ: يا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ إِزاري يَسْتَرْخِي إِلَّا أَنْ أَتَعَاهَدَهُ، فقالَ لهُ رسولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّكَ لَسْتَ مِمَّنْ يَفْعَلُهُ خُيَلاءَ». رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ، وَرَوَى مُسْلِمٌ بَعْضَهُ .
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever trails his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection." Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, my lower wrap slips down unless I attend to it constantly." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, "You are not among those who do it out of arrogance." Reported by al-Bukhari, and Muslim reported part of it.

جرَّ ثوبه: سحب ثوبه على الأرض بسبب طوله، ويشمل جميع الثياب. خُيَلاء: الخيلاء التكبُّر والعُجْب. لم ينظر الله إليه: أي نظر رحمة ورضًا. يسترخي: ينزل. أتعاهده: أي أقوم بشدِّه ورفعه كلما ارتخى.
"Trails his garment": drags his garment along the ground because of its length; this includes all garments. Arrogance (khuyala): pride and self-conceit. "Allah will not look at him": that is, a look of mercy and pleasure. "Slips down": comes down. "I attend to it": that is, I keep tightening and lifting it up whenever it slips down.

أنّ إسبال الإزار تكبّرًا من كبائر الذنوب. أنّ المرء لا يستطيع أن يبرّئَ نفسه من الخيلاء إلا بشهادة الوحي كما شهد النّبيّ صلّى الله عليه وسلّم للصحابي الجليل أبي بكر الصديق. لا ينطبق ما ورد من الوعيد على الإسبال في حق الرجال على النساء، لأنّ النساء أُمرن بستر أقدامهن، وأبيح لهن إطالة ثيابهن بمقدار ذراع.
Letting the lower wrap trail out of arrogance is among the major sins. A person cannot declare himself free of arrogance except by the testimony of revelation, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) testified for the noble Companion Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. The threat that has come regarding letting garments trail applies to men, not to women, because women were commanded to cover their feet and were permitted to lengthen their garments by the measure of a forearm's length.
