عَنْ أبي جُرَيٍّ الْهُجَيْمِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: أتيتُ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ فقلُتُ: عَلْيكَ السَّلامُ يا رَسولَ اللّهِ، قالَ: «لا تَقُلْ: عَلَيْكَ السَّلامُ، فإنَّ عَلَيْكَ السَّلامُ تَحيَّةُ الموْتَى» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، والتِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صحيحٌ.
From Abu Jurayy al-Hujaymi (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Do not say: 'Upon you be peace,' for 'Upon you be peace' is the greeting of the dead." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

حرص الصحابة رضي اللّه عنهم على اغتنام كلام رسول اللّه صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم والعمل به. أن "عليك السلام" تحية الموتى باعتبار عادة الجاهلية وليس ذلك هو المشروع في السلام على الموتى، بل كان صلّى اللّه عليه وسلّم يسلّم على الأموات كالأحياء فيقول: "السلام عليكم دار قوم مؤمنين".
The eagerness of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to seize upon the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and to act upon them. That "Upon you be peace" is the greeting of the dead according to the custom of the pre-Islamic period, though this is not what is legislated for greeting the dead; rather the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to greet the dead as he greeted the living, saying: "Peace be upon you, O abode of a believing people."
