عنْ أنسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أنَّهُ مَرَّ عَلى صِبْيانٍ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِمْ وقالَ: كانَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يَفْعلُهُ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ .
From Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): that he passed by some children and greeted them, and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do it. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

استحباب السلام على الصغار تعليمًا لهم السلام، وتأديبًا لهم عليه، وتطييبًا لقلوبهم. أنّه كان من شأنه وعادته وهديه صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم وسنّته أنّه يُسلّم على الصبيان. أهمّية العناية بالصغار، والرحمة بهم، ولين الجانب معهم، والتواضع لهم، وترك ما يجرح نفوسهم. تواضع النّبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم.
The recommendation of greeting children, in order to teach them the greeting, to train them upon it, and to gladden their hearts. That it was his way, custom, guidance, and sunnah (peace and blessings be upon him) to greet children. The importance of caring for the young, showing mercy to them, being gentle with them, humbling oneself toward them, and refraining from what wounds their feelings. The humility of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
