عنْ أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ: أنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قالَ: «إنَّ اللّهَ يُحِبُّ الْعُطَاسَ، وَيَكْرَهُ التَّثَاؤُبَ، فَإذَا عَطَسَ أحَدُكُمْ وَحَمِدَ اللّهَ تعالى كانَ حَقًّا على كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ سَمِعَهُ أنْ يَقُولَ لَهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ اللّهُ، وأمَّا التَّثَاؤُبُ فإنَّما هُوَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ، فـإذا تثاءبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَرُدَّهُ ما استطاعَ، فإنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ إذا تثاءبَ ضَحِكَ مِنْهُ الشَّيْطَانُ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah loves sneezing and dislikes yawning. So when one of you sneezes and praises Allah the Exalted, it becomes a duty upon every Muslim who hears him to say to him: 'May Allah have mercy on you (yarhamuka Allah).' As for yawning, it is only from Satan, so when one of you yawns, let him restrain it as much as he can, for when one of you yawns, Satan laughs at him." Reported by al-Bukhari.

حقًا: أي سنة متأكدة. من الشيطان: أي يحبه الشيطان ويسعى في أسبابه. ضحك منه: لتغيّر هيئة المتثائب.
"A duty": that is, a strongly emphasized sunnah. "From Satan": that is, Satan loves it and works to bring about its causes. "Laughs at him": because of the change in the appearance of the one yawning.

معنى المحبّة والكراهة في العطاس والتثاؤب منصرف إلى سببهما، وذلك أنّ العطاس يكون من خفّة البدن وانفتاح المسام وعدم الشبع وهو بخلاف التثاؤب فإنه يكون ناشئّا عن كثرة الأكل وثقل البدن، والأول يستدعي النشاط للعبادة والثاني على عكسه. استحباب تحصيل أسباب العطاس وهي النشاط، وخفة البدن الَّذِي ينشأ عن عدم الإفراط في الشبع، وكراهة تحصيل أسباب التثاؤب. أن يقال للعاطس يرحمك اللّه وهو واجب على كل من سمعه يحمد اللّه، وقيل إذا كانوا جماعة فشمّت واحدٌ منهم العاطس كفاهم. الحثّ على دفع التثاؤب بإطباق الفم أو وضع اليد عليه. البعد عن كل ما يحبّه الشيطان من أفعال قبيحة.
The meaning of love and dislike regarding sneezing and yawning refers back to their causes: sneezing arises from lightness of body, the opening of the pores, and not being overly full, whereas yawning arises from eating much and heaviness of the body; the former prompts energy for worship, while the latter is its opposite. It is recommended to bring about the causes of sneezing, namely energy and the lightness of body that comes from not overeating, and it is disliked to bring about the causes of yawning. One should say to the sneezer, "May Allah have mercy on you," and this is obligatory upon everyone who hears him praise Allah; it is also said that if they are a group and one of them responds to the sneezer, it suffices for the rest. Encouragement to suppress yawning by closing the mouth or placing the hand over it. Keeping away from everything Satan loves of ugly deeds.
