عنْ أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «إذا عَطَسَ أحَدُكُم فَلْيَقُلْ: الْحَمْدُ اللّهِ، وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ أَخُوهُ أَوْ صَاحِبُهُ: يَرْحَمُكَ اللّهُ، فَإِذَا قَالَ لَهُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللّهُ فَلْيَقُلْ: يَهْدِيكُمُ اللّهُ، وِيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "When one of you sneezes, let him say: 'Praise be to Allah (al-hamdu lillah),' and let his brother or companion say to him: 'May Allah have mercy on you (yarhamuka Allah).' Then when he says to him 'May Allah have mercy on you,' let him say: 'May Allah guide you and set your affairs right (yahdikumu Allah wa yuslih balakum).'" Reported by al-Bukhari.

يهديكم اللّه: يرشدكم بالإيصال إلى ما يرضيه. بالكم: حالكم وخاطركم.
"May Allah guide you": may He direct you by leading you to what pleases Him. "Your affairs" (balakum): your condition and your state of mind.

أنّ السنّة وجوب أن يقول العاطس: الحمد للّهِ، وعلى من سمعه بعد حمده للّهِ أن يقول له: يرحمك اللّه، ويرد العاطس بعدها بقوله: يهديكم اللّه ويصلح بالكم. الزيادة على ما ورد من الأدعية في الأحاديث غير مشروعة، والاتباع خير من الابتداع. من الحِكم في أنّ العاطس يحمد اللّه قيل لأنّ العُطاس يدفع أذى الدماغ وينشطه، فيكون سببًا لسلامة الأعضاء.
It is the sunnah that the sneezer should say, "Praise be to Allah," that whoever hears him after his praising Allah should say to him, "May Allah have mercy on you," and that the sneezer then responds by saying, "May Allah guide you and set your affairs right." Adding to the supplications that have come in the hadiths is not legislated; following the sunnah is better than innovating. Among the wisdoms behind the sneezer praising Allah, it has been said, is that sneezing repels harm from the brain and invigorates it, thus being a cause for the soundness of the limbs.
