عَنْ أَبي سعِيدٍ الخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قالَ في: قُلْ هُوَ اللّهُ أَحَدٌ: «وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ، إِنَّهَا لَتَعْدِلُ ثُلُثَ القُرْآنِ». وفي رِوَايةٍ: أَنَّ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قالَ لأَصْحابِهِ: «أَيَعْجِزُ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يقْرَأَ بِثُلُثِ الْقُرْآنِ في لَيْلَةٍ» فَشَقَّ ذلِكَ علَيْهِمْ وَقالُوا: أَيُّنَا يُطِيقُ ذلكَ يا رسولَ اللّهِ، فقالَ: «{قُلْ هُوَ اللّهُ أَحَدٌ} ثُلُثُ الْقُرْآنِ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيّ.
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said concerning "Say: He is Allah, [who is] One" (Qul huwa Allahu ahad): "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, it is equal to a third of the Qur'an." In another narration: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his companions: "Is any of you unable to recite a third of the Qur'an in a night?" That was difficult for them and they said: Which of us can bear that, O Messenger of Allah? He said: "'Say: He is Allah, [who is] One' is a third of the Qur'an." Reported by al-Bukhari.

قل هو اللّه أحد: أي السورة المسماة بأول آية منها، وتسمى سورة الإخلاص. والّذي نفسي بيده: يقسم النّبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم باللّه الذي يملك نفسه تأكيدًا للأمر واهتمامًا به. لتعدل ثلث القرآن: أي باعتبار ثواب قراءتها، لاشتمالها على توحيد اللّه تعالى وتعظيمه. أيّنا يطيق ذلك: من منّا يستطيع أن يقرأ ثلث القرآن مع التدبر وإعطاء كل حرف حقه من وجوه الأداء. الصمد: هو وحده المقصود في الحوائج.
"Say: He is Allah, One": that is, the surah named by its first verse, and it is called Surah al-Ikhlas. "By the One in whose Hand is my soul": the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) swears by Allah who owns his soul, to affirm the matter and stress its importance. "It equals a third of the Qur'an": that is, with respect to the reward of reciting it, because it comprises the tawhid of Allah the Exalted and His magnification. "Which of us can bear that": which of us is able to recite a third of the Qur'an with reflection, giving each letter its due in the modes of recitation. "al-Samad": He alone is the one sought in [times of] needs.
