عَنْ عَبْدِ اللّهِ بْنِ عَمرِو بْنِ العَاصِ رضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يقُولُ: «إِذَا سَمِعْتُمُ النِّدَاءَ فَقُولُوا مِثْلَ مَا يَقُولُ، ثُمَّ صَلُّوا علَيَّ، فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ صَلَّى علَيَّ صَلاةً صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ بِهَا عشْرًا، ثُمَّ سَلُوا اللّهَ لِيَ الْوسِيلَةَ، فَإِنَّهَا مَنْزِلَةٌ في الجَنَّةِ لاَ تَنْبَغِي إِلّا لَعَبْدٍ مِنْ عِبَادِ اللّهِ، وَأَرْجُو أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا هُوَ، فَمَنْ سَأَلَ لِيَ الْوَسِيلَةَ حَلَّتْ لَهُ الشَّفَاعَةُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you hear the call to prayer, say the like of what he says, then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten blessings upon him for it. Then ask Allah to grant me al-wasilah, for it is a station in Paradise fitting for only one of the servants of Allah, and I hope that I am he. So whoever asks al-wasilah for me, intercession becomes due for him." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
النداء: الأذان. صلى اللّهُ عليه: الصلاة من اللّهِ الثناء والرحمة والمغفرة، ومن الملائكة الاستغفار، ومن العباد الدعاء. الوسيلة: الطريقة التي يتوصل بها الإنسان إلى غايته، والمراد بها هنا كما فسرها النبي منزلة عالية في الجنّة. فمن سأل لي الوسيلة: أي من طلب من اللّهِ أن يعطيني هذه المنزلة العالية في الجنة. حلت له: وجبت له. الشفاعة: هي طلب التجاوز عن الذنوب، والمراد بها هنا أنّ النّبيّ يعطى يوم القيامة الشفاعة العظمى، وهي سؤال المغفرة من اللّهِ تعالى لمن يأذن له بالشفاعة.
"the call": the adhan. "Allah sends blessings upon him": Allah's salah is praise, mercy, and forgiveness; from the angels it is seeking forgiveness; and from the servants it is supplication. "al-wasilah": the means by which a person attains his goal; what is meant here, as the Prophet explained it, is a lofty station in Paradise. "whoever asks al-wasilah for me": that is, whoever asks Allah to grant me this lofty station in Paradise. "becomes due for him": becomes incumbent and assured for him. "intercession": intercession is the request for pardon of sins; what is meant here is that the Prophet is granted on the Day of Resurrection the greatest intercession, which is asking forgiveness from Allah the Exalted for those whom He permits him to intercede for.

استحباب متابعة المؤذّن والقول بمثل قوله، ويقول في الحيعلتين: (حي على الصلاة - حي على الفلاح) لا حول ولا قوة إلّا باللّه، والدعاء بعد الأذان. تعظيم شرف الصلاة على النّبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم. انتفاع الفاضل بدعاء المفضول وحصول الثواب لكليهما.
The recommendation of following the muezzin and saying the like of what he says, and saying at the two calls to come ("Come to prayer — Come to success"): "There is no might nor power except by Allah," and supplicating after the adhan. Magnifying the honor of sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The benefit that the superior gains from the supplication of the inferior, and the attainment of reward for both of them.
