عنِ ابنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُما قالَ: قالَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «بُنِيَ الإِسْلامُ على خَمْسٍ: شَهادَةِ أَنْ لا إِلٰهَ إِلّا اللّهُ وأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، وإِقامِ الصَّلاةِ، وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ، وَحَجِّ البَيْتِ، وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Islam is built upon five: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, the establishment of prayer, the giving of zakat, the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
بني: أقيم، فقد شبه الإسلام ببناء عظيم محكم وأركانه الخمسة بقواعد ثابتة محكمة حاملة لذلك البناء. شهادة أن لا إلٰه إلّا اللّه: أي الاعتراف والإقرار أنّه لا معبود بحق إلّا اللّه. إقام الصلاة: الإتيان بها جامعة الشروط والأركان. إيتاء الزكاة: إعطاؤها لمستحقيها.
"Built": erected; Islam is here likened to a great, solid edifice, and its five pillars to firm, sturdy foundations that bear that edifice. "The testimony that there is no god but Allah": that is, acknowledging and affirming that there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allah. "The establishment of prayer": performing it complete with its conditions and pillars. "The giving of zakat": paying it to those entitled to it.

أنّ الإسلام لا يتحقق عند أحد إلّا بالإيمان بهذه الأركان الخمسة، فمن أنكر واحدًا منها فقد كفر. أنّ الشهادتين هما الاساس القلبي والعملي لسائر العبادات. أنّ من أعمدة الإسلام التي بني عليها إقامة الصلاة المفروضة.
Islam is not realized in anyone except through belief in these five pillars; whoever denies one of them has committed disbelief. The two testimonies are the inward and practical foundation of all other acts of worship. Among the pillars upon which Islam is built is the establishment of the obligatory prayer.
